Care guide
Silk is a living cloth. Treated gently, it grows softer and more beautiful with every year. Always follow the label sewn into your piece first.
On every label
Washing by hand, when the label allows
- Use cool water, below 30°C, with a neutral detergent made for silk.
- Press the water gently through the cloth. Never rub, twist or wring.
- Keep it brief: silk should not soak.
- Rinse in cool, clean water.
- Roll the piece in a towel to lift the water out.
- Dry flat or on a padded hanger, in the shade, away from direct sun.
Pressing and keeping
Press silk on its reverse with a cool iron, through a clean cotton cloth. Velvet is never pressed: hang it in a steamy room, or steam it lightly from a distance, so its pile stays whole.
Keep pieces on padded hangers in breathable cotton covers, away from sunlight and damp. Embroidered and beaded pieces rest best laid flat, folded with tissue.
Cloth by cloth
Hand wash cool and quickly, dry in the shade. Its colour settles and softens with time; that is the cloth ageing well, not fading.
Dry clean only. Steam, never press, and never fold it along the pile.
Dry clean. Store on a padded hanger so the woven pattern does not crease.
Dry clean, and store flat. Never iron over embroidery or beads from the front.
